Precision4 dp

1 Kilowatt = 0.001 Megawatt

Key Formulas

Kilowatt → Horsepower (mech)

hp = kW × 1.34102

Horsepower (mech) → Kilowatt

kW = hp × 0.7457

Watt → Kilowatt

kW = W × 0.001

Kilowatt → Watt

W = kW × 1000

Formula

MW = kW ÷ 1000

Building energy managers report monthly consumption in kWh but must file peak demand reports with utilities in megawatts. A factory whose monitoring system shows 3,200 kW peak demand needs to report 3.2 MW for grid interconnection studies. Renewable energy developers also express project capacity in MW, so converting the kW output of individual turbines or inverters to MW makes project-level planning easier.

Real-World Examples

A large commercial building with 1,000 kW peak demand = 1 MW — the threshold for many utility demand-response programs.

1000 kW = 1 MW

A steel mini-mill at full production drawing 2,500 kW = 2.5 MW — significant enough to require a dedicated utility substation.

2500 kW = 2.5 MW

A 500 kW industrial backup generator = 0.5 MW — typical for hospitals and data centers needing N+1 redundancy.

500 kW = 0.5 MW

A 100 kW rooftop solar array on a large commercial building = 0.1 MW, covering roughly 500 m² of panels.

100 kW = 0.1 MW
